Winter Bass fishing with lures may be the most challenging fishing there is. The constant casting of the lure, the excitement of the catch.  All keep you more alert than the usual bobber fishing we like to do while relaxing. Winter fishing may not be the most comfortable but it does get you out of the house and onto the lake.

Winter Bass Fishing - ClubHusband's TackleBox

The winter brings bigger and colder challenges to bass fishing. As the lunkers get lethargic with every drop in temperature there are still some things you can do to coax them into biting.

The first thing I would consider is to get out your favorite suspending jerk bait and give it a throw. Mine is a Bomber 15A. It is a nice size and makes a good presentation for those bass that are looking for a big meal. For years rule of thumb has been to go small when it's cold but I think that is a mistake. Bass in the winter feed much less often so I think it makes sense that when they do bite they are looking for a prey that is worth their while.

If you can't get them to hit the jerk bait my next try would be a decent sized jig ,maybe 3/4 oz with a pig trailer. There is nothing like a jig and a pig to make me feel like I'm doing some real bass hunting. Uncle Josh® Pork Baits--Bait Frog 11 GS - is a very good trailer. I use the frogs but the strips and the crawdads are the favorites of many. I like to work the shore line from the bank. It can be very effective in the winter and you won't have the under growth to contend with like in the spring and fall. Just remember to cast to areas with access to deeper waters.

If these two old favorites aren't working I pull out my Stanley Taper Titanium Double Willow Spinnerbait - 1/2 oz. Chartreuse/White T12-975DW 1/2 OZ CHARTREUSE/WHITE The beauty of spinnerbaits are that they are idiot proof. Something that I often need. Especially if I'm out just to relax and get away from life for awhile. With the spinnerbait I don't have to think. I can just stand on the bank and throw it out and retrieve. Sometimes slow sometimes fast. If fish are biting you will get a hit on this sooner or later and you can cover a lot of water in a hurry without even thinking.

If you strike out with all three of these I think you can be certain it was the fish and not the man. Don't get discouraged just remember what Bill Dance says "a bad day fishing is better than a good day at work". Happy hunting.
