The Tackle Box
Photo by jedyer When I got back to the hospital (several hours later) I was informed by the nurse that my wife had been asking for me .Oh hell .I was late ..she was already awake. Like any good husband I talked my way out of it, or so I had thought. My wife and mother-in-law (who was in town visiting at the time) both informed me later that day that it was Sunday ..MOTHERS DAY!!!!!! Moral of the story: If you decide to go fishing while your wife is having surgery and it just happens to be Mother's Day, be prepared to NEVER hear the end of it. Contributed by Anonymous (Dave)
Wife had surgery to remove wisdom teeth so of course I couldn't go fishing............till she fell asleep. We had a few minnows to use and a heat wave approaching so time was limited. Went out late afternoon didn't get much action.Caught a couple of sunfish a few crappie. Crappie referred to both their species and their size. Had my lawn chair along so while my son battled his ultralight that knew more knots than an eagle scout I tried to catch a nap. After feeling my pole jerk I tried to spot my bobber with no success. Realizing with my keen fishing sense that the reason I couldn't find it was I was getting a hit and it was buried about six feet underwater. With the speed of a sleepy fisherman I immediately set the hook and began to reel him in. It had some weight to it and gave me some trouble. About half way in I knew with my vast experience and knowledge that I was about to land a carp. Not thrilled with carp catching I continued to reel until he came in to site. I was wrong it was a cat.A big beautiful cat. Now with a little more enthusiasm I finished the fight. He went a very respectable four and half pounds, weighed not guessed. He was a little more than two feet and mean as a, well mean as a hooked catfish. Today was definitely quality and not quantity but we were happy.
Was able to get out last couple of days. Yesterday it was overcast and in the eighties so I thought we might have a chance of catching something. To increase our odds we went with live bait. Our bait of choice was minnows. We thought for sure we could scare up a few bass with a little meal like that. Of course we didn't catch a single bass but believe it or not we caught twelve catfish. Nothing huge but not bad, ranging from one to two pounds. Caught a couple small perch too, but they were very small. Went back out today same spot same time but today was a little warmer. (low 90s) Didn't do to well couple of bites nothing landed. Left and came back at dusk still using minnows, still no bass but again a couple of cats. Big one was about three pounds, small one two. Of course you know to convert fisherman weight to standard weight you divide by two. Still better than nothing.
It's almost the end of June and I haven't been fishing more than a couple of times. That's what I call a rotten summer. I'm going to have to make up for it in July and August. Not your best fishing months. But not bad if you bring enough liquid refreshment to keep your mind off the heat and on the casting. In the summer I like the a big(3/4oz) spinnerbait. it's easy to use I don't have to worry about backlash and the titanium ones never break or even bend. Its no brains fishing. And once in awhile I get lucky and a big ole largemouth attacks mistaking it for someone elses lure.I like those light green ones with the fancy color name chartreuse or some damn thing like that. Light green is a whole lot easier to remember.I also like a colorado blade ,willow blade combo gold in color. Not that it catches more fish than the silver but it looks better with my gold rod. It seems to me that it doesn't much matter what you throw if they are in the mood you are going to have fun with spinner baits. good luck and heres hoping you get to the lake early and stay late.
