TWO BULL ELKS WITH ONE RIFLE
|
|
It was the early 70s, we were hunting elk in Northern Idaho, outside
of Elk City. The day started early (before sunrise), as we drank our coffee
and ate what we called breakfast, the plan for the day was being set. As
we set out for the days hunt, myself, Mike, Lee and Gary were all dressed
warm as snow lay on the ground. It made for a beautiful sight as well as
what we all thought would be a great day for hunting. The area was thick with
woods and steep mountains, the air was crisp and cool.About an hour into
our hunt we heard an elk bugle. |
The sound came from the draw below. Splitting up and trying to cover the
area, I went down the West slope, Lee the middle and Mike and Gary took the
East side. The hours passed as we slowly moved down the mountain all the while
listening to the elk bugling. Mike and Gary moved into the lower draw first,
(Lee and I arrived just moments later). They heard two bulls. The bulls were
making all kinds of noise thrashing around in the brush and trees. Mike and
Gary slowly moved in. As they made their way they saw that the thrashing
and noise was due to the two bulls fighting. As they moved in they could
not believe their eyes. Never had any of us witnessed such an act live and
in person. Two big bull elks fighting. It was quite a sight. One bull, a royal
(7 points) and the other a big 6 point bull. The royal bull charged the 6
point bull breaking off a tip of one of his horns.Mike quickly took aim on
the royal and shot
the bull went down.

Thinking quickly Mike threw his rifle to Gary (who did not bring his
rifle on this trip as he did not plan on getting his elk until a later date).
Gary not wanting to miss this opportunity, quickly took aim on the 6 point
bull
one shot and down he went. The great aim and quick thinking ended
with two large bull elks with one rifle a 7mm. As the hunt ended, these
were the only bull elks that were taken, but still a great 2 week hunt, a
great sight to have witnessed and a really great story to remember and share
with all. |
