Wrestling with the WWE

Has professional wrestling become the most honest sport in America? After watching recent boxing matches and the NBA finals I would have to say maybe.
Although every wrestling match the WWE puts on is staged and scripted they don't pretend it's not. They tell you right up front it's "sports entertainment". They make no bones about it being a show put on to entertain the fans. No pretense that these highly paid athletes is there for the love of the game. No mystery that the biggest stars in the game is going to get every break and therefore win. Pure sports enthusiasts may turn their nose up at Vince McMahon but at least he doesn't pretend his sport is fair.

Look at the NBA. They put on what is supposed to be a legitimate sports league but to any grade school ball player it is obvious there are different sets of rules for different teams. There are even different rules for players on the same team. What is really amazing the better players are allowed more freedom within the rules than the lesser players. Now we all understand no one comes to a game to see Shaq or Kobee foul out but I say be up front about it. Wouldn't it be fairer to give them unlimited fouls without fear of disqualification than to quit calling fouls when they get four or five. The way it is now a team gets down to the end of a game and if it is close they don't have a chance if the superstars on the other side are close to fouling out. The referee is not going to blow the whistle if it means fouling out a star. I know, you know and the superstar knows so let them have an unlimited amount of fouls. There would be no chance of disqualification so the ref could call the game the way he sees it.The other team would get their deserved free throws. The league wouldn't have to treat you and me like we are stupid enough to believe that an elbow to the face is not a foul.

The only other solution I know of would be to have Commissioner David Stern rush the ref after a no call, shouting and screaming to distract him while the pesky little point guard gets a substitute referee to come out of the dressing room and make the call. This would save the day for the underdog. But of course Stern with his sense of justice would then rule that the original no call stands allowing the superstar to remain champ. All would be well. We would understand it's not life it's just a game. The players wouldn't have to play as hard. The league wouldn't have to pretend they are a real sport. The networks wouldn't have to muzzle the announcers to keep their contract.

But most of all I wouldn't have to waste my time explaining to my sons the reason I watch basketball is because it reminds me of a grand sport that was once a standard for fair play. I could just tell them I now watch it because everyone knows who is going to win so I can just sit back and enjoy the action.
